What is Roulette?
Roulette is a French casino game that was invented sometime in the 17th century. At the time, the game looked a little different. It was not until the 20th century before the game rebranded into what we know today.
The game itself is quite simple. But today there are a lot of different variations and advanced game types. For the sake of simplicity, we use European roulette as an example before we go into other variants.
The goal of the game is to guess the correct result for a ball that spins in a wheel before stopping in a slot. If you guess right the right slot, you win – if you guess wrong, you lose.
This is how Roulette looks like
The table itself is divided into two sections. The layout may vary depending on the game provider, whether you are playing on a mobile phone or you are playing roulette on a slot machine.
But the basics are always the same. The two parts of the table consist of a wheel and a betting area. The betting area is for bets, while the wheel controls the game’s results. As a player, you only interact with the betting area, which is where you place your bets in the form of chips. The dealer takes care of the spinning of the wheel.
The Roulette Wheel
The wheel consists of 37 numbered slots from 1 to 36. The green compartment consists of a zero (0). It is these numbered slots that are then giving the game its result.
The order of the numbers on the wheel is designed in such a way as to achieve the greatest possible variation in results.
Red and black slots are spread out in such a way that none of the colours has an adjacent slot of the same colour.
Low and high numbers are scattered around the entire wheel so that the odds of getting a low/high result are the same.
Odd and even numbers are carefully distributed along the wheel so that there are never more than two odd/even slots next to each other.
When all bets are placed, the dealer spins the wheel. At that stage, the ball comes in as the dealer spins it in the opposite direction as the wheel spins. When the ball finally ends up in a slot, a result is determined. It is the numbered slot that ball landed in which are the winning number and the winning colour.

The different parts of the wheel
The wheel is sometimes divided into different parts based on system bets in French roulette. This is often seen in European roulette as well. We will go into this in detail further down in the article.
Inside bets
The game board on the table is divided into two different parts – inside bets and outside bets.
Inside bets, also called ‘internal bets’, are the numbered areas that represent the slots on the wheel. It is with inside bets that you can win some real money. But that also means that inside bets have the lowest probability of resulting in a win.

Straight-up, also called single number, is a type of bet where you put your chips on a single number. Single number bets pay 35:1.
Split bet
Split bet placed on 7 and 10.
With Split, also called double number, you can play on two numbers that are next to each other. The chips are then placed on the line between the numbers. Bets on Split pay 17:1.
Street bet
Street bet placed on 7, 8, and 9.
With trio bets, you can bet on three numbers. Two of the numbers must be in line with the zero (0). Chips are placed in one of the two corners that connect the zero and adjacent numbers. Trio bets pay 11:1.

Corner bet

With line bets you can bet on six numbers. The chips are then placed at the bottom of the line that connects two rows. Line bets pay 5:1.
Outside bets
Outside bets, also called ‘external bets’ and ‘side bets’, are secondary bets that you can place chips on.
Unlike inside bets, outside bets offer a higher winning probability. However, this means that payouts for outside bets are lower.

Column bet
Column bet placed on middle row numbers.
Column bets allow you to bet on an entire column of numbers. Chips placed on column bets are distributed over the numbers in the column you are playing on. To bet on a column, place your chips on one of the three boxes that say “2 to 1”. These bets pay 2:1.
Dozen bet
Dozen bet placed on 12 first numbers of table.
There are three types of dozen games in roulette. “1st 12”, “2nd 12” and “3rd 12”. These bets allow you to bet on twelve numbers at once:
1-12, 13-24, or 25-36
Bets on Dozen pays 2:1.
Colour bet
Colour bet placed on red numbers.
Colour is among the most popular bets in roulette. You can bet on red or black. Both colours cover 18 slots each. Bets on colour pay 1:1.
Even/Odd bet
Even bet placed on even numbers.
Even/Odd are also among the more popular outside bets. You can bet that the ball ends up in a slot with an odd number or an even number. Bets on even/odd pay 1:1.
Low number bet
Low bet placed on low numbers.
Low numbers cover 18 of the lowest numbers on the table. Betting on low numbers divides your chips between 1 – 18. Betting on low numbers pays 1:1.
High number bet
High bet placed on high numbers.
High numbers cover 18 of the highest numbers on the table. Bets on high numbers divide your chips between 19 – 26. Bets on high numbers pay 1:1.
Neighbour bets
With neighbour bets, you can bet on a number and its neighbours in a special betting wheel called the racetrack. It is called racetrack since it looks like an actual racetrack. But in actual fact, it is just the roulette wheel but just stretched out to show system bets.
You can select up to nine neighbours for a single number. This is an excellent strategy for guessing where on the wheel you think the ball ends up. All numbers on the board are in order. Therefore, it can be difficult to keep track of which numbers are next to each other on the wheel. With the help of a special playing field, you can get a visual image of the wheel on which you can place your bets.
To give you an idea of what it can look like when playing on neighbouring bets, we will give you an example.
Your chips are automatically placed on the playing field after you have selected number 26 in the playing field.
Other types of bets
There are also a few other types of system bets that are a little more unusual. These are more common in French roulette but also occur in European roulette.
If you play roulette at a landbased casino, they are often called “call bets” or “announced bets”. These two bets can be made and placed while the wheel and ball are spinning.
However, there is a slight difference between call bets and announced bets.
Call bets
The player can verbally confirm a system bet to the dealer while the wheel and ball are spinning without placing chips on the table.
Announced bets
The player can verbally confirm a system bet to the dealer while the wheel and ball are spinning but must place chips on the table.
At an online casino, these bets are not available. When the wheel spins, no more bets are accepted. However, players can place system bets manually while bets are being accepted.
Finales en Plain
Finales en Plain lets you bet on any number ending with a specific digit. You can choose between 0 and 9 to place a Finales en Plein.
For example, if you are playing on a Finales en Plein 4, you are playing on all numbers ending with a four. The game automatically places chips on all single numbers of 4, 14, 24 and 34.
Finales en Cheval
Like Finales en Plein, with Finales en Cheval you can bet on numbers with a specific ending digit. The difference is that Finales en Cheval places a combination of single numbers and splits.
For example, if you are betting on a Finales a Cheval 5/6, five chips are placed, and they are distributed as follows:
- Straight-up on 15 and 16
- Split on 5 and 6
- Split on 25 and 26
- Split on 35 and 36
If the numbers 15 and 16 had been next to each other on the playing field, a split would also have been placed there. But since they are not, individual bets are placed.
Complete bets
Complete bets, also known as full bets and maximum bets, are for betting on all possible betting types on a single number. This is a great way to play big and can result in a big payout. The downside is that it is an expensive way to play online roulette and can eat through your balance very quickly.
What does a complete bet look like? We will go through an example to give you a better idea.
Let’s say that you want to place a complete bet on number 17 with a maximum single bet of 100 dollar. In this case 40 chips are required to complete a full bet. We will use US dollars in this case. They are distributed as follows:
- Straight up on 17 (100 dollar)
- Split on 17 and 14 (200 dollar)
- Split on 17 and 16 (200 dollar)
- Split on 17 and 18 (200 dollar)
- Split on 17 and 20 (200 dollar)
- Street bet on 17, 16 and 18 (300 dollar)
- Corner bet on 17, 16, 13 and 14 (400 dollar)

That is a total bet of 4000 dollar! As you can see, it is an awfully expensive bet which is why not a lot of players bet on it.
Tiers du Cylindre
Tiers du Cylindre is a system bet that covers a total of twelve slots. The slots in a Tiers du Cylindre comprise of one third of the wheel in the opposite direction of the zero. The bet is placed on the numbers 27, 33 and all numbers in between. This system bet requires six chips, and they are distributed as follows:

Les Orphelins
Les Orphelins is a system bet that covers a total of eight slots. Slots in a Les Orphelins include five numbers on one side of the wheel and three numbers on the opposite side
The French word Orphelins is translated orphan in English. The reason why the bet is called orphan is because these numbers are not covered by the system bets in Tiers du Cylindre and Voisins du Zero. It may seem like a tasteless name, but the name has been around for decades. A bet on Les Orphelins covers the numbers 1, 20, 14, 31 and 9 on one side of the wheel and 6, 34 and 17 on the other side of the wheel. This system bet requires five chips, and they are distributed as follows:

Features and buttons
Bet Limits
Each roulette game and table have its own minimum and maximum bet limits. The tables are usually divided into low limit, regular and high limit. Also known as low stakes, regular and high stakes or high roller.
The limits are often displayed in the casino’s games lobby before you click on the table you want to play at. These limits determine what you can bet the lowest, as well as what you can bet the highest.
Chips
Your chips are usually displayed in conjunction with the game board. Each time you place a bet with chips, the same value is deducted from your game balance. So, you do not have to buy chips like in a traditional casino.
You can change the amounts on chips to better suit your desired value of the bets.
In some games, it is enough to select chips and then click on the game board to place them. While on other games you are required to drag them to the board from your tray.

Special rules
Many types of roulette, including European, American, and French, offer special rules. These rules are not available on all live roulette tables, but usually on advanced tables from some gaming providers.
La Partage and En Prison are two popular rules found in French roulette. But they have also started to appear in European roulette to give players extra features. It is entirely up to the gaming provider to choose which rules they want to apply to the table. Even if they base the game on American, French, or European roulette.
La Partage
La Partage is a rule that is beneficial to you as a player. If you play roulette with La Partage, you can get back some of your bet in the event of a loss.
The rule applies to external bets such as odd/even, red/black and low/high numbers. As you have probably already noticed, it is on bets that have the same probability of winning and losing.
If you bet on any of the above external bets and the ball ends up at zero (0), you get half the bet back!
Example: You bet 200 dollars on red, but the ball ends up on 0. You will then only only half of your bet thanks to the La Partage rule.
En Prison
En Prison means “in prison” in French, which can give you an idea of what the rule entails. The rule is similar to La Partage, but the difference is that you do not get the bet back in case of loss. Instead, the bet is marked by the dealer to point out that it is imprisoned.
When the bet is imprisoned, it is replayed. So, you get a second chance.
Example 1: You bet 200 dollars on red, but the ball ends up at 0. Your bet is played again and if the ball ends up in red, your winnings are paid out.
Example 2: You bet 200 dollars on red, but the ball ends up at 0. Your bet is played again and if the ball ends up in black or 0 it will be a loss.
Surrender
The Surrender rule is basically the same as La Partage and En Prison. But the difference is that it is only available in American roulette.
Something that makes American roulette unique is that there are two zeros on the wheel. A zero (0) and a double zero (00).
Example: You bet 200 dollars on an odd result with the ball ending up at 00. You then get back half of your bet. You get it even if it ends up at 0.

Popular versions of roulette
Just like regular slot machines, new versions of roulette are constantly being released. This is because the demand for innovative features is constant. In addition, gaming providers can release nicer, faster, and better games over time. But the variants that have been around for over a hundred years are French, European, and American roulette. It is these three that have been used as the base game for the hundreds of different versions of roulette that you can play today.
French Roulette
French Roulette was accidentally invented in the mid-17th century by the Frenchman Blaise Pascal. But at the time, it was not meant to be a casino game. Pascal was a mathematician who was busy inventing different types of machines.
It wasn’t until the middle of the 19th century before the wheel saw a major makeover. Then the zero on the wheel was introduced and thus the advantage of the house increased. How did this change our chances of winning?
From the fact that there was a 50% chance that you would guess correctly on red/black, high/low, and even/odd, there was now a 48,6% chance. The introduction of an extra numbered slot also made it more difficult to guess the correct number. From the fact that there was a 2,78% chance of guessing the correct number, it became 2,70% instead. A marginal difference that of course affects the chances of winning in the long run.
American Roulette
When the French game began to appear in the United States, the Americans got a flash of genius. Roulette was already a hit with gamblers, but casino owners wanted to see better revenue. That is when American roulette was invented.
To give the house a better advantage in the game, an extra numbered slot was added to the wheel. This numbered slot is the double zero (00). So, on an American wheel, there are two green compartments with zeros – a zero and a double zero. How does it affect your chances of winning? Well, from having a 2,78% chance of guessing the correct single number, you now have a 2,63% chance instead.

Other versions
There are some popular variants of roulette that can contribute to a different gaming experience. This is about being able to offer as much variety as possible in the base game. Many of the variants have been launched by gaming providers who want to expand their portfolio with unique games.
Multiball Roulette
Multiball Roulette is based on the regular game but offers a different experience. You can probably figure out how the game works as the name of the game is quite revealing.
In the Multiball version, you play with more than one ball at a time. If this is your first time playing roulette, this is not something we recommend. In fact, it can be a bit confusing to keep track of bets and results.
Place your bets and play with up to 10 balls on one spin. Two balls cannot land in the same slot, which means that your chances of winning increase. Remember that your bet is multiplied by the number of balls you play with.
Example: You bet 100 dollars on number 5 and play with four balls. Your total bet will then be 400 dollars.

Mini Roulette
Mini Roulette is a mini version of the European game. As you probably know by now, the playing field on the European table is divided into three dozen (1st, 2nd, and 3rd 12). Mini Roulette is only played with a dozen.
This means that you have 13 numbers to play on. 1 to 12 plus zero (0). You can still place most bets such as column, line bet, corner bet and colour.
Mini Roulette often comes with the La Partage rule. Which means that you get back half your bet if you play a game with 1:1 in payout and the ball ends up at 0.
Compared to regular roulette, there is not much exciting to be found in the mini variant. Basically, it is just a simplified version of the game with less options. The game may suit beginners, but we prefer European roulette.
Progressive Jackpot Roulette
This too is most likely revealed by its name. Just like with slot machines, there is roulette with progressive jackpots.

Is d’Alembert a safe way to win money? Of course not.
Why? Even if there was a 50% chance each time to win a 1:1 bet, that does not mean it goes your way.
As a human being, you think that there is a greater chance that the result will be black if it has previously been red five times in a row. However, since each spin is independent of the previous spin, this is not the case.
If we then calculate the actual probability of winning a 1:1 bet, the chances decrease even more. The probability of winning a bet on, for example, red is 48,64% (due to the green zero). This again means that in the long run, you can’t count on this strategy as “safe”.
